OK. Now we’re really starting to wonder: would Pharrell have been better off just listing Marvin Gaye as a co-producer?
After all, credits are important — and if the $7 million dollars he has to pay Marvin Gaye’s family for his recent ‘Blurred Lines’ lawsuit doesn’t remind him, maybe this little listening session will.
Similar to the use of Marvin Gaye in “Blurred Lines,” music fans have noticed that the melodic beats of Pharrell’s worldwide hit, “Happy,” also ring to a similar tune as Gaye’s classic, ‘Ain’t That Peculiar.’
When asked about the similarities between “Happy” and their father’s music, Marvin Gaye’s children agreed that yes, the two tracks sound similar, but they’re not planning any further legal action, at least for now.
“I’m not going to lie. I do think they sound alike,” Nona Gaye, Marvin’s 40-year-old daughter, told CBS. However, she added that her family isn’t thinking about the legal implications right now and that “we’re not in that space.”
“We’re just in the moment today and we’re satisfied,” Janis Gaye, Marvin Gaye’s ex-wife, added.
While the family won their lawsuit against “Blurred Lines,” and are currently seeking an injunction for the song, it’s unclear whether or not their legal battles are completely over, especially considering that Pharrell and Robin Thicke have appealed the lawsuit.
