Michael Brown’s family may have lost their own child to senseless gun violence, but they’ve made it very clear that they’d never resort to retaliatory violence themselves.

“We reject any kind of violence directed toward members of law enforcement,” the family wrote in a public statement. “It cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Their remarks are in response to the recent shooting of two police officers during a protest in Ferguson, Missouri. Both police survived the shooting with injuries and investigations are still underway.

The family urged readers to mobilize around peaceful protest  rather than vengeance, which they find counterproductive and distracting as tactics for a non-violent movement.

“We specifically denounce the actions of stand-alone agitators who unsuccessfully attempt to derail the otherwise peaceful and non-violent movement that has emerged throughout this nation to confront police brutality and to forward the cause of equality under the law for all,” the statement reads.
