Rochae Davis only had an afro pick tucked into her waistband as she walked through South London, but somehow, the police thought it was a gun. The 15-year-old teen was arrested and spent nine hours in police custody after cops reportedly apprehended her for possession of a firearm, the Croydon Advertiser Reports.
Rochae’s mother, Simone Davis, came to her daugther’s rescue and explained that it was all just “a terrible mistake.”
“There is no way my daughter would have a gun – she isn’t that type of girl,” she said.
Rochae was meeting up with friends at McDonald’s when a girl from another school decided to confront her and start a fight, the Advertiser reports. “This girl had been bothering Rochae for months, wanting a fight with her over something really stupid,” Simone Davis explained to the news site. “My daughter didn’t want to back down, so she agreed in order to save face.”
Rochae decided to bring an afro pick to the fight to defend herself after hearing that her opponent was toting a knife. Still, despite the face off between the two girls, no weapons were used, and Rochae certainly didn’t have a gun, her mother explained.
The fight between the girls only lasted two minutes and afterward, Rochae decided to return to McDonalds. That’s when the cops confronted her. “As I was walking back with a friend, six police officers appeared … and had guns,” she told the Advertiser. “They pushed us against a wall and searched us.”
“It was only after they had finished that they said they had seen me on CCTV with a firearm,” the teen added. “I was so confused. I said I didn’t have a gun, but they wouldn’t listen.”
Rochae has since been released on bail but is expected to appear at the police station again in April. A police spokesperson has acknowledged that no firearm was found on the teen.
