Leaders from several prominent organizations held a media briefing on Tuesday to announce plans to highlight Black women’s health, Black liberation and how the movement for Black lives and Black women voters will play an important role in shaping policy and political discourse in 2016.
Black Lives Matter, New Voices for Reproductive Justice and the Trust Black Women Partnership have decided to stand in solidarity with one another.
The group believes that by unifying, they can further work to eradicate and transform laws that work against equality for Blacks in the country.
“Today, we launch this statement of solidarity with Black Lives Matter to affirm that the work that we’ve been doing for twenty years for Black women’s reproductive freedom and justice is connected to the movement for Black lives, and to recognize that Black Lives Matter has brought things to a crucial tipping point,” said Trust Black Women’s Director Monica Raye Simpson.
“The way we talk about it, it isn’t just about the rights of women to be able to determine when and how to be able to start families, but also our ability to raise families,” said Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Alicia Garza.
