Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was not a docile, powerless peacemaker. Shy as a child, Gandhi quickly got over his feelings of insecurity after he developed a love for justice. In his youth, he fought for Indians affected by the apartheid, taking place in South Africa. In an attempt to silence Gandhi’s activism, he was unjustly imprisoned several times during his life. His belief in non-violence did not stop him from going after the British Rule. Gandhi was sentenced to six years in 1922 for insurrection against the lawful authority of British Crown. He was denied a pillow, but used books and spare clothes to rest his head. After Gandhi received an operation for appendicitis, he was released from prison in 1924. Gandhi successfully used his strategies of non-violence to take on British colonial rule. Martin Luther King Jr. was inspired by the political work of Mahatma Gandhi.
