Chicago saw summer-like temperatures over the weekend and with that came another round of shootings.
49 shooting incidents took place throughout the city between Friday and early Monday, reports the Chicago Tribune.
A 24-year-old man became the city’s 49th victim after sustaining gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg around 3 a.m. in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. About 2 hours earlier, mourners gathered at the crime scene of a homicide near 78th and South Shore after a man had been found dead.
An 81-year-old woman also fell victim to the violent shootings.
As Iola Burress mourned the death of her daughter sat on a South Side Auburn Gresham porch with her grandson, the two were shot on Friday night after a white SUV pulled up and people inside began firing shots.
The incident happened at about 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Carpenter. Buress was struck four times in the wrist, lower belly and arm, her great-grandson told NBC Chicago. Her grandson, Sylvester Burress was struck near his buttocks.
Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition as of Saturday morning.
Twenty-two people were shot Friday night into early Saturday and another 18 were shot late Saturday morning into Sunday. Two of those shootings resulted in fatalities.
Hopefully, these incidents do not foreshadow this summer.
Stop the violence.
