Earlier today, Mother Jones released a series of videos of Mitt Romney talking to a private group about the presidential race, his electability and President Barack Obama’s policies. The videos were from a confidential source.
Romney said that “there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government.” He continued to say that people would want to vote for Obama’s “entitlement” policies — such as universal healthcare. He also discussed people who voted for Obama in the 2008 Presidential election but disagreed with his policies; he made a distinction between “liking” Obama and believing his policies are failures.
“And because they voted for him, they don’t want to be told that they were wrong, that he’s a bad guy, that he did bad things, that he’s corrupt,” Romney said. “Those people that we have to get [to vote Republican], they want to believe they did the right thing, but he just wasn’t up to the task.”
Jim Messina, Obama for America Campaign Manager, said that it’s “shocking” that a presidential candidate would tell a group of wealthy donors and individuals that “half of the American people view themselves as ‘victim.’”
“It’s hard to serve as president for all Americans when you’ve disdainfully written off half the nation,” he said.
