The family of 38-year-old Jason Harrison was just looking for help from the police with their mentally ill son. But help isn’t what his mother received when she opened her door to officers responding last summer. Instead Dallas officers shot and killed her son within seconds of seeing him over a small screwdriver. Now the family has released graphic video of the killing, where officers order Harrison to drop a screwdriver he is holding. When Harrison doesn’t comply, they shoot him to death.
Reuters reported that Harrison’s mother had only wanted help getting her son to a local hospital so he could be treated for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The disturbing video shows Harrison, walking behind his mother as she speaks to police. They are exiting the doorway when the police see he is holding a screwdriver in his hands. He was then killed within seconds of the police telling him to drop it.
Harrison’s family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city, claiming he did not post a threat.
