Nearly a week after six women acquitted George Zimmerman of all charges in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the slain teen’s parents publicly speak about the verdict. Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin made the network morning show rounds on Thursday and admitted they’re still in shock over the controversial not-guilty verdict.
Fulton said she wondered if the jury looked at the case from her son’s point of view on NBC’s “Today Show,” according to AP.
“He was a teenager. He was scared. He did run,” she told host Matt Lauer. “We didn’t get the verdict we wanted because we wanted him to be (held) accountable.”
Martin also expressed disappointment in the jury’s decision.
“We felt in our hearts that we were going to get a conviction,” he said. “We felt that the killer of our unarmed child was going to be convicted of the crime he committed.”
The grieving parents also said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that they still believe Zimmerman, who identifies as Hispanic, racially profiled their son, who is Black.
“Obviously, any time you have a person that makes an assumption that a person is up to no good, that’s some kind of profiling,” Martin said. “Was he racially profiled? I think if Trayvon had been White, this never would have happened.”
The parents also support criminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman through the Justice Department.
