Target Refuses Apology for White ‘Annie’ Ads

What a disappointment. With the racial tensions happening across the world, you would hope that businesses and corporations would deter from adding on to the turmoil.

In the real world, however, that’s just not they way any of this goes and it’s sad to see Target would involve itself in racial controversy.

Upon the release of the revamped and modernized classic, Annie, the retailer created an advertorial campaign featuring a White Annie as opposed to showcasing the star of the 2014 film version, award-winning actress Quvenzhané Wallis. Adding to the uproar, the powers that be, refuse to issue an apology to the young star.

Issuing this statement of defense instead, “Girls from a variety of backgrounds were featured within the campaign, reflecting that anyone can embody the spirit and character of Annie,” a sales rep said.

That’s a sure load of crap.

Now that it’s a Black girl who earned the spotlight for the film, you want to push for a “rainbow” campaign thinking this weak defense will dismiss the true tone of the White “Annie” campaign?

Yeah, no. Try again.

A Change.org petition with thousands of supporters is now in circulation demanding an apology and the removal of the ads.

Seriously, is it really that hard to give young Black girls a positive reflection and a hope that they, too, can embody a great spirit? Furthermore, racism is taught, Adults! Kids can be raised with a heart of accepting all people no matter racial background or social status.

This is definitely a huge strike against Target and their marketing reps.

Our question to you remains: will this lead to a Target boycott?
