The Prairie View City Council voted to rename a street after a political activist who died at a Waller County jail last month.
The street, currently known as University Drive, leads to Prairie View A&M University, Bland’s alma mater. The 28-year-old woman was set to begin a job at the university when she was arrested during a traffic stop on July 10.
Officials say Bland hung herself in her cell just three days later, but family members do not believe that she took her own life.
Dozens of demonstrators showed their support for the measure by marching to Prairie View City Hall from campus, reports Houston Public Media.
Activist Denise Mattox told the news outlet that the street will honor Bland’s memory.
“And maybe because we are remembering every day, with every citation that’s written, every time we turn down this road, we’re remembering what can tragically happen if we don’t do things correctly,” Mattox said.
The street will be named Sandra Bland Parkway.
According to Council members, the name change is expected to go into effect sometime before the university’s homecoming in October.
A proposal to build a park named after Bland was also approved.
