Sheriff Defends Confederate Monument

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. is voicing his support for a Confederate monument that was recently removed.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the outspoken sheriff, who is Black, posted a tweet last week questioning Kentucky officials who decided to remove the monument adjacent to the University of Louisville campus.

“Separating people from their history is the second step to enslavement after first disarming them,” Clarke tweeted.

The 70-foot monument is capped with a statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy.

In his tweet, Clarke linked a story from an anti-government website called From The Trenches World Report about the monument’s possible removal.

A Kentucky judge has since issued an order temporarily blocking the move.

Clarke’s post was retweeted more than 300 times and likely nearly 400 times.
