Jack and Jill Celebrates “Power and Potential Day”
Nonprofit Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and more than 30,000 of its members and associates celebrated Founders Day and the organization’s first-ever “Power and Potential Day” on Tuesday through acts of service and encouragement of today’s youth. “The goal of ‘Power and Potential Day’ is to celebrate the creativity of America’s youth and nurture young leaders who will be unafraid of pursuing their passions,” said JJOA president Tamara Turnley Robinson. “We want children across the country to know that they have the power today to create their future and fulfill their dreams. The best way to demonstrate our support for them is to let them know they have our love and support and to help them tap into their potential and explore their interests.”
State of Union Speech to Address Minimum Wage
Challenging lawmakers to help him create greater economic opportunity, President Barack Obama will use his State of the Union address Tuesday to announce he’s raising the minimum wage for new federal contract workers to $10.10 an hour, underscoring a go-it-alone strategy in an election year critical to Democrats’ hopes for retaining Senate control.
Officer Indicted in Death of Jonathan Ferrell
A grand jury has indicted a Charlotte police officer for voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed former Florida A&M football player. The indictment came Monday hours after a judge ruled the North Carolina Attorney General’s office could resubmit the case to a grand jury. Investigators say Randall Kerrick shot 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell on Sept. 14 as Ferrell looked for help after a car crash.
Marshawn Lynch Agrees to Skittles Deal
Seattle Seahawk running back Marshawn Lynch’s love affair with Skittles is no secret. Back in the day, his mother would give him the candy, which she dubbed “power pellets.” But on Tuesday, the NFL player is expected to receive financial compensation for giving the candy company publicity.
Rapper Flavor Flav Appears in NY Court
Flavor Flav pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from a traffic stop earlier this month as he raced to his mother’s funeral in suburban New York. State police said the rapper and reality TV star, whose real name is William Drayton, was speeding and driving without a license, a felony, on Jan. 9 as he drove on the Meadowbrook Parkway not far from where the Freeport, N.Y., native grew up. He was ticketed and told to appear for his arraignment Tuesday.
Kanye West Settles Case with Beating Victim
Remember that kid who was reportedly hurling racial insults at Kim Kardashian and then Kanye allegedly beat him up? Well, that kid is now $250,000 richer, according to TMZ. The rapper has arranged a civil settlement with the victim; however, it remains unclear if Yeezy will be charged with battery. But that seems unlikely.
