Obama Reveals $100 million HIV Research Initiative

President Barack Obama is making huge efforts to find a cure for HIV by redirecting $100 million to the cause. On the day after World AIDS Day, the president made the announcement at the National Institutes of Health.

HealthCare.Gov on the Mend

Computer crashes should be giving way to insurance coverage — if the government’s diagnosis of its health care website is correct. The Health and Human Services Department released a progress report Sunday on its effort get the troubled HealthCare.gov website on the mend. Administration officials said the worst of the online glitches, bugs and delays may be over.

Renowned Dentist Emma Louis Eagan Dies

Eagan, who graced the cover of JET magazine back in 1958, died in her sleep at the age 85 from an unknown cause, according to the Detroit Free Press. The trailblazer graduated from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry after receiving her degree from Spelman College and was believed to be the second Black hygienist in Michigan. Her then-husband John Eagan, a Morehouse graduate, was Michigan’s first African-American orthodontist.

NBA great Michael Jordan, 50, and his wife of seven months are expecting their first child together. This is the fourth for Jordan. Evelyln Lozada of Basketball Wives is prepping for a new baby, too. She’s pregnant with her second child. Congrats!

Jesse Owens’ Medal Up For Auction

Amid the jerseys and baseball bats held in a secure room at SCP Auctions, there’s a piece of sports memorabilia that speaks to much more than athletic prowess: an Olympic medal won by track star Jesse Owens at the 1936 Games in Berlin. The medal — being auctioned online — recalls both the Nazi propaganda myths that Owens busted with his world record-setting 100-yard dash, and the American segregation that he came home to when he returned to the U.S. after the Games, which Adolf Hitler had orchestrated to showcase his ideas of Aryan supremacism.

Rita Ora Cast in Fifty Shades of Grey

The singer will be playing the role of Mia, the adopted sister of Christian Grey, in the upcoming movie. This isn’t the artist’s first film; she made an appearance in Fast Six earlier this year. Fifty Shades of Grey will hit theaters February 13, 2015.

Awkward Black Girl Reportedly Comes to HBO

The popular webseries may have finally found a home at HBO. Larry Wilmore, television correspondent and writer of hit shows like In Living Single and Sister, Sister is teaming up with Issa Rae to produce the series.
