George Zimmerman is once again a free man after an arrest on criminal charges, but his freedom carries conditions. The former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted in the fatal shooting of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin earlier this year was released from jail Tuesday pending arraignment on the latest charges against him: aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief. Zimmerman was released on the condition that he wear an electronic monitor, keep his distance from guns, and stay away from the girlfriend who accused him of trying to choke her and then a week later pointing a shotgun at her. His bond was set at $9,000.
Joseph Paul Franklin, a white supremacist who targeted blacks and Jews in a cross-country killing spree from 1977 to 1980, was put to death Wednesday in Missouri, the state’s first execution in nearly three years. Franklin, 63, was executed at the state prison in Bonne Terre for killing Gerald Gordon in a sniper shooting at a suburban St. Louis synagogue in 1977. Franklin was convicted of seven other murders and claimed responsibility for up to 20, but the Missouri case was the only one that brought a death sentence.
Kobe Bryant Returns to Practice
The shooting guard went back to practice with Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. There’s still no word on when he’ll play a game, but he’s glad to be making progress. “There’s always a sense of enjoyment when you come back. … Put the jersey on, you walk out in practice, and felt like it was ’97 again and I was getting my first start as a pro,” he said.
NFL Union to Investigate Dolphins
The NFL Players Association is conducting its own investigation into the Miami Dolphins scandal where Richie Incognito is accused of harassing his teammate Jonathan Martin. NFL special investigator Ted Wells began interviewing players, coaches and staff of the team this week.
Chris Brown Gets Three Months in Rehab
Chris Brown is going back to rehab, this time with new rules from a judge. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin on Wednesday ordered Brown to serve three months in a residential treatment facility and to submit to drug testing. The judge also ordered the R&B singer to perform at least 24 hours of community labor per week.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star was hospitalized earlier this week for blood clots in her lungs. It was rumored that Leakes suffered a heart attack, but she cleared up the whispers in a statement on her website. “I’m thankful to be alive as the doctor advised me that most people don’t recognize the symptoms of blood clots and don’t go to the doctor and that’s when the big problems start happening.”
Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade is sharing his story of fatherhood in a new television show. Currently called Three the Hard Way, the television program is the first under Wade’s ZZ Productions, a company that bears the initials of his sons’ first names, according to the Associated Press.
