Homeowner charged in Renisha McBride case
Prosecutors have charged a suburban Detroit homeowner in the death of a 19-year-old woman who was shot in the face on his porch. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Friday that 54-year-old Theodore P. Wafer of Dearborn Heights faces a charge of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride early on Nov. 2.
New Anthology Features Black quotations
“Bartlett’s Familiar Black Quotations,” which has just been published, has the most comprehensive of subtitles: “5,000 Years of Literature, Lyrics, Poems, Passages, Phrases, and Proverbs from Voices Around the World.” It reaches back to ancient times and oral cultures and continues right up to rap, Malcolm Gladwell and President Barack Obama. The editor, Retha Powers, wanted to capture the personal, the political and the artistic. “I wanted to be able to show all of that, the will to create a culture and a life,” she said.
Troubled singer Chris Brown is out of rehab. Brown’s representative Nicole Perna says the 24-year-old singer will continue treatment for anger issues as an outpatient in Los Angeles and “appreciates all of your encouragement and support.” He entered rehab voluntarily after his arrest in Washington, D.C., following a fight with a man that led to a misdemeanor assault charge that puts Brown’s probation in jeopardy.
George Zimmerman Won’t Face Domestic Violence Charges
On Sept. 9, Zimmerman, his wife, Shellie, and her father, David Dean, got into a dispute at the couple’s home. During a scuffle, Dean was punched in the nose and an iPad was damaged. When police sent the remains of the device, which allegedly had footage of the incident, to a lab, technicians were unable to extract the video Shellie Zimmerman recorded.
