Detroit’s Bankruptcy Trial Begins

A lawyer says Detroit will present a “mountain of evidence” to show the city is insolvent and deserves to turn itself around in bankruptcy court. An extraordinary trial opened Wednesday in Detroit’s 3-month-old bankruptcy, the largest public filing in U.S. history. The city must show it cleared certain hurdles to be eligible to restructure as much as $18 billion in debt.

Teenager Files Lawsuit After Being Accused of Fraud

When Trayon Christian, who had been saving up his money from a part-time job, purchased a $320 designer belt by Salvatore Ferragamo from Barneys, officers pounced on him as soon he walked out of the door. Despite showing his debit card, ID and receipt, the 19-year-old  wasn’t released from the local precinct until the cops verified his purchase with Chase bank. Not only did he return the belt and vow never to shop at there again, he also filed a lawsuit Tuesday for unspecified damages against the Madison Avenue store and the NYPD.

Michael Jackson Crowned As Top-Earning Dead Celebrity

After taking the number-two spot behind Elizabeth Taylor last year, MJ regained the top position with estimated earnings of $160 million. “He earned the bulk of his bucks from two Cirque du Soleil shows, his Mijac Music catalog, recorded music sales and his half of the Sony/ATV publishing empire – which includes the copyright to hits by the Beatles, Lady Gaga, Eminem and Taylor Swift, among others,” Forbes said. Behind the King of Pop were fallen stars Elvis Presley and Bob Marley.

Jermaine Jackson Faces Jail Time for Unpaid Child Support

In other Jackson family news, MJ’s older brother could be behind bars for 20 days if he doesn’t pay $12,000 in back child support to his ex-wife Alejandra Jackson. The father of two has fallen behind before. It’s been reported that he bought a $160,000 Ferrari last month.

TLC Biopic Breaks Records

More than 4.5 million people tuned into VH1 Monday night to catch Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story. The film is the highest-rated original cable movie of 2013  and is the network’s highest-rated original movie ever. And, of course, Twitter was booming too with 1.92 million tweets with the hashtag #CrazySexyCool.
