Cleveland Kidnapper Commits Suicide
The Cleveland man serving a life sentence for kidnapping three women and raping them in his home for a decade hanged himself in his prison cell, officials said Wednesday in another startling twist in the case that horrified and transfixed the city. Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the state prison in Orient, said JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman for the corrections system. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly after being blasted for her comments about “Afro” hair on “The Talk,” co-host Sheryl Underwood has apologized on “The Steve Harvey Morning Show.” The comedian said: “To all of you, I say, I’m very sorry for my failed attempt at humor surrounding something that’s very sensitive to us: our hair.” To listen to her full apology, click here.
Terrence Howard Threatened Suicide
The actor allegedly threatened to commit suicide with an X-Acto blade during a fight with his estranged wife Michelle Howard, according to court documents. The new filing also claims that Howard referred to himself as “Satan” after she confronted him about numbers she found belonging to other women. A judge granted his wife a temporary restraining order following an argument with the actor in Costa Rica earlier this summer.
The rapper is receiving major backlash from the Human Rights Foundation for performing at the wedding of Aisultan Nazarbayev, the grandson of the controversial Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev last Saturday. HRF President Thor Halvorssen described the country as a “human rights wasteland,” where the entertainer would be imprisoned for expressing his views. Receiving $3 million for the appearance, neither West nor his publicist responded immediately for comment.
Six Olympic gold medals is not enough for Usain Bolt. The champion says he wants to win one more in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics before he retires, according to the Associated Press. The Jamaican runner also wants to set a world record in the 200 meters in 2014 and claim the gold at the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland next year.
New York Jets’ rookie quarterback, Geno Smith, will start in the season’s home opener Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Associated Press reports. The announcement was made through the team’s website on Wednesday. Regular starter Mark Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury in a preseason game last month.
The guys of the pop band One Direction didn’t stand a chance against Lee Daniel’s historic film. For the third weekend straight, the movie held the number-one spot, bringing in a new total of $79,466,378 over the Labor Day Weekend and beating “One Direction: This is Us in 3D.” Sorry, 1Ders, guess you’ll have to wait until next week.
Celebrity Bodyguard Tasered and Killed
Sources say Norman Oosterbroek, who protected Nelson Mandela and watched over other celebrities such as Jay Z and Lady Gaga, was attacked by police with a Taser Monday evening and died shortly thereafter. The famed bodyguard allegedly broke into a couple’s home in Florida, got into a fight with one of the homeowners and failed to cooperate with police upon their arrival, resulting in use of the Taser. Toxicology reports are pending.
