Justice Department to Sue North Carolina
The Justice Department will sue the state of North Carolina for alleged racial discrimination over tough new voting rules, the latest effort by the Obama administration to fight back against a Supreme Court decision that struck down the most powerful part of the landmark Voting Rights Act and freed southern states from strict federal oversight of their elections.
Fifth Man Charged in Chicago Mass Shooting
David Logan, 22, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and obstructing justice in connection to the mass shooting in Chicago that wounded 13, including a 3-year-old boy. Four other men have also been charged in the shooting.
Pastor Shot and Killed During Service
Louisiana pastor Ronald J. Harris was fatally shot while preaching to a crowd of more than 60 on Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene during his revival service at Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles. Law enforcement officials have a suspect in custody as of Saturday.
Confederate Flag Raised in Virginia
Hundreds of people witnessed the rising of a 15-by-15-foot Confederate flag in Virginia on Saturday. The controversial flag was meant to honor the South’s causalities in the Civil War, according to supporters. A heritage group called Virginia Flaggers announced plans to erect the flag alongside Interstate 95 earlier this summer. A larger American flag was raised in protest in Richmond later that same day.
Nina Simone’s estate is suing HTC Smartphone Company, for a minimum of $1 million dollars after they used Nina Simone’s song in a TV commercial. They allegedly ripped off her 1965 hit “Sinnerman” without obtaining the rights and used it in their “You Are Different”commercial.
It looks like Rev Run is going to be a grandfather! Congratulations are in order for Vanessa Simmons who announced she is expecting a baby girl on Instagram. Simmons, who has been dating Mike Wayans (son of Damon Wayans), on and off again for eight years, is said to be five months pregnant.
Lamar Odom Breaks Ties with Dad
Apparently Lamar Odom doesn’t take it too kindly when people, especially his dad, diss his new family, the Kardashians. After Joe Odom allegedly said the famous family is to blame for Lamar’s problems and called matriach Kris Jenner and Kanye’s baby mama Kim some not-so-nice-names. So, Lamar has put an end to paying for his dad’s rent, which amounts to nearly $3,000/month. Ouch!
