A new poll says that 36 percent of millennials ages 18 to 38 have chosen binge-watching on streaming services over sex.
The Wall Street Journal published a poll Sunday that set out to find if access to on-demand streaming services, such as Netflix, had an impact on the sex lives of its users. The results discovered 1 in 4 millennials turned down sex in favor of binge-watching.
Complex.com revealed a paper published by San Diego State University psychology professor Dr. Jean Twenge that linked streaming services to a decline in sex. Per Twenge, couples engaged in sexual acts during commercial breaks and episode transitions before the streaming services grew in popularity. Since streaming services have minimal interruptions and transitions between episodes, the opportunity to have sex has decreased.
The online media site reached out to a Netflix spokesperson who distanced the streaming service from the new findings. “We take pride in being part of the cultural zeitgeist, but getting credit for a decades-long decline in sex is beyond even our programming abilities,” the spokesperson said.
The poll’s findings coincide with various reports about millennials and the United States’ declining birth rate. According to Healthline.com, the U.S. recorded its lowest birth rate in 30 years.
