Rookie cop Peter Liang was indicted, Tuesday by a grand jury for the fatal shooting of unarmed Akai Gurley.
On Nov. 20 of last year, Liang and another officer were patrolling the Pink Houses in East New York when Liang fired a shot in the dimly lit stairwell, striking Gurley in the chest causing him to tumble to the floor below.
In the six minutes following the shooting, during which Liang nor his partner identified themselves before firing when Gurley walked out of an apartment with his girlfriend, responded to the radio. Instead, they opted to text their union reps.
Liang has been indicted for second-degree manslaughter and will face criminal charges, possibly sending him to jail for 15 years.
The NYPD commissioner originally called the shooting “an unfortunate accident.”
Liang is said to be turning himself in on Feb.11.
