For artist Janelle Monaé, her singing talents bring her message to the masses, but she says for others their power is behind the voting polls.

“As an artist, there’s nothing more important to me than my voice,” she said. “It’s important to remind people of the fight that it took for us to be able to vote. It also gives us the right and the power to convey how we feel about the country and the communities we live in.”

So the “Tightrope” singer joined forces with the White House on Tuesday to encourage more voter registration. In fact, Monaé and White House Senior Adviser, Valerie Jarrett, led a discussion with reporters on National Voter Registration Day and the work being done around the country to make voting more accessible.

Among efforts, the General Service of Administration launched vote.usa.gov., a user-friendly platform created to better assist eligible voters in registering and also updating their information.

For her part, Monaé shared that through her website, social media and concerts, where she will set-up shop and provide ways for people to become educated as well as register to vote.

Using the hashtag #GetRegistered across social media, the White House encourages citizens to tag photographs about the importance of registering. In addition, over 2,000 organizations are joining the #GetRegistered movement and have events planned in states across the country to ramp up of the vote and get people engaged.

“With over 50 million eligible Americans who are currently not registered to vote, it’s crucial to do what we can to make voter registration accessible for everyone,” Jarrett stated. “A big part of what we have to do is reach people where they are and make it as easy as possible for them to engage, regardless of who’s on the ballot.”

Jarrett also believes that it’s important to start individuals young with the process of voting, noting “if people get in the habit of voting when they’re young, it will stay with them.”
