A Houston man says he was arrested by U.S. Marshals in the state of Texas for not paying off his outstanding federal student loans.
Paul Aker says the marshals detained him last week for a $1,500 federal loan he received almost 30 years ago.
According to Aker, seven deputy U.S. Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old student loan.
Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans. As a result, attorneys representing the government and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court. They are also asking judges to use the U.S. Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.
Fox 26 reports that U.S. Marshals in Houston have to serve anywhere from 1200 to 1500 warrants to people who have failed to pay their federal student loans.
