Vice President Joe Biden will swear in Loretta E. Lynch as the 83rd Attorney General of the United States on Monday.
The move makes Lynch the first Black woman to ever hold the position. She will succeed Eric Holder. Lynch has a history of overseeing corruption, terrorism and gang cases in her years as a federal prosecutor. She currently serves as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
Lynches confirmation wasn’t easy. It was one of the nation’s longest cabinet-level confirmation delays, having just received approval on Thursday from the Senate.
Her confirmation took longer that just about every nominee for the office except for two: Edwin Meese III, who was nominated by President Ronald Reagan and A. Mitchell Palmer, who was selected by President Woodrow Wilson.
The major hurdle came from Congressional Republicans. While they agreed that Lynch was indeed qualified for the job, they opposed her because she supports President Obama’s executive actions on immigration.
Ms. Lynch is expected to deliver remarks at the event.
