Leave Romney’s Grandbaby Out of Jokes

Say what you want about politicians and their policies, but please…for the love of all things holy, leave the kids and babies alone!

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry issued an apology Tuesday morning for her insensitive comments about former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Black grandson, according to CNN. On her self-titled weekend program, Harris-Perry and her panelists decided to caption a photo of Romney and his wife surrounded by their grandchildren with a rendition of the popular Sesame Street song “One of These Things is Not Like the Others.”

We love Melissa Harris-Perry, but since when is it okay to make fun of transracial adoptions? As a “Black child born into [a] large white Mormon family,” you’d think Harris-Perry would know better. But, as we learned from the Justine Sacco situation, common sense does not always prevail.

To further add insult to injury, one of the panelists noted the picture “really sums up the diversity of the Republican Party…At the convention, they find the one black person.” After calling the baby “gorgeous,” Harris-Perry said her goal in 2040 is to make sure the biggest thing that year is the wedding between Kieran Romney and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s daughter, North West.

Harris-Perry apologized on Twitter:

Again, we get it. People make mistakes. But a LOT of these mistakes could be avoided if people took a second to think before they speak…or tweet.
