Sheriff Lee Baca is calling for a re-envisioning of the Los Angeles County system that will expand the educational opportunities for county inmates. His $1 billion proposal will make room for inmate classrooms by gutting the old central jail, reports NBC Los Angeles.
Other aspects of his plan include building a new central jail, repurposing Lancaster’s Mira Loma detention center, and transferring female inmates out of the Century Regional Detention Facility, either to Mira Loma or to the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.
The proposal to replace the aging Men’s Central Jail has been put on hold for at least another 60 days while a private consultant conducts additional research and analysis on the plan.
Men’s Central Jail is the nation’s largest, and one of California’s oldest jail.
