Since its inception, hip-hop music has been blamed for many of society’s problems.
The culture’s criticism often stems from people saying the music’s lyrics glorify drugs and violence. If we’re being honest, multiple genres of music talk about drugs and violence, but hip-hop always seems to catch the most hell.
The findings in a recent study may not change how the genre’s is perceived from critics, but the results are interesting. Addiction rates in this country seem to be on the rise and music is said to be one of the biggest influences in society.
Addictions.com did a study using data from Songmeanings and found the musical genre that mentions drugs the most was country music. It was the “winner.” Following country music’s top spot was jazz, pop, electronic and then rock.
As far as where hip-hop landed in the study? It came in last in the eight genres that were used.
Along with this new information it was also found the talk of drugs in music overall has decreased. It rose in the 2000s and has dropped every year.
Does this now change the popular criticisms that aimed at hip-hop?
