In this edition of “Happy Headlines,” a Georgia mom and her son have decided to take life by the reins and ride it all the way to graduation, together!

After becoming a mother at 13 years old, Vickie McBride was determined to continue school. Although tough, she used the help and support from her mother to go to college and graduate school while raising her son, Maurice, and later her three other children.

However, while she was trying to keep the balance in her life, Maurice had began his own life struggles getting mixed up in the wrong crowds and dropping out of school at 16. After ending up in a juvenile probation facility, he got a spiritual awakening and decided to get his life back on track.

Maurice received his GED and went on to college and graduate school following in his mom’s footsteps through education. After becoming a professor at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, he decided to step away again…but only this time to continue to better himself.

Telling his mom his plans of getting his PhD, he asked if she wanted to do it with him and she agreed. Now, despite their journey, Vickie graduated with her PhD in K-12 Education and Maurice in Organizational Management from Capella University.
