At an appearance during the convention for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Boston, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus admitted that the GOP hasn’t been making itself relatable to Black voters.
“We have… decided that it’s OK to show up once every four years about five months before an election,” Priebus said.
However, the Republican party plans on fixing their “Black problem” in time for upcoming elections, MSNBC.com reports.
Priebus said that the GOP needs to “get out there and fight and talk to people,” so that they can change their low amount of Black votes.
Though he stated that he understands that “this is not something that’s going to change overnight,” Priebus told the NABJ crowd that the party is currently spending about $8.5 million a month on “Growth and Opportunity” outreach operations to target voters of color.
Blacks only account for 2 percent of all Republican votes, according to the Pew Research Center.
