Everyone is still buzzing about politician Todd Akin’s comments on what he called “legitimate rape.”
Actress, advocate and rape survivor Gabrielle Union sat on a panel on MSNBC’s NOW with Alex Wagner, to talk about the Missouri GOP candidate, his comments and her stance.
“Todd Akin…I was shocked. I would say saddened except that it pissed me off,” said Union. “I shot Todd a little twitter message today kindly explaining – though I didn’t realize there was a need to – that all rape, Todd is legitimate. And every rape victim should have equal access to services and justice and healthcare. I believe all women should have equal access to quality healthcare and preventative services.”
Union, who for years has shared her story, went on to say “he absolutely said our experience is not valid. Whatever that is. I’m here to throw a blanket over all of you, and I’m here to be judge and jury to your experience and what sort of access you should have made available to you. I don’t understand how we’re moving in this direction. It’s counterproductive.”
Earlier this year, the actress said in an O magazine article of her experience that it happened when she was 19-years-old and working a summer job at a shoe store. “One night, as my coworker and I were closing up, a man robbed the shop and raped me at gunpoint. Afterward, I was in shock. I just couldn’t believe that something like that could happen. For days I asked myself, “Why me?”
Union participated in a Planned Parenthood breast health event Monday.//
