It’s no secret we LOVE first lady Michelle Obama, which is why we’re super excited about her new video encouraging first-generation college students!
In I’m First, Obama shares her experience as the first person to graduate from college in her family and discusses some of the challenges she faced:
“At first, I even worried that maybe I just wasn’t as smart as some of my classmates but soon enough I realized that was all in my head. I was just as smart as everyone else and I had just as much to contribute…No matter where you come from or how much money your family has, I want you to know you can succeed in college and get your degree.”
According to I’m First, an online initiative founded by Center for Student Opportunity to provide support and information to first-generation college students, “30 percent of students enrolled in postsecondary institutions today are first-generation college students, while 24 percent—or 4.5 million—are both first-generation and low-income students.”
