The family of an 18-year-old woman who died in a suburban Birmingham jail says her death was caused by suicide.
Kindra Chapman used a sheet to hang herself after she was arrested on robbery charges, Times Free Press reports.
In a statement released Thursday, Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls said that his office has reviewed video, investigative reports and more in Chapman’s death at the Homewood City Jail.
According to Falls, video shows Chapman becoming agitated while alone in a cell July 14. He says the video shows her tying a sheet to a support rail and then hanging herself. Officers discovered her body when they returned an inmate from court to the cell.
While Chapman’s family acknowledges the cause of death, Attorneys representing the family say they’re investigating how it happened while she was in custody.
