New York City has reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve the claim over his chilling death, according to the NY Times.
July 17 will mark one-year since the chokehold incident that took place outside of a convenience store in Staten Island, claimed the life of Garner, who was approached by police officers for allegedly selling loose cigarettes.
As Garner was wrestled to the ground and held in what came to be a fatal hold, he was captured on cell phone video yelling ‘I can’t breathe’, later prompting the nationwide #ICantBreathe movement.
The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. However, in December the grand jury denied action to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo.
According the New York Times, the Garner’s family lawyer said the city had until Friday to come to an agreement. Failure to do so would have resulted in a filed suit.
