Charles Ramsey, the hero who freed a few women who had been held captive for years, spoke to CNN’S Anderson Cooper on Tuesday.
Ramsey recounted his courageous story about the fateful day when he heard a woman, identified as Amanda Berry screaming from his neighbor’s home. Ramsey broke down the door, liberating Amanda Berry and her child. The other two women that were found at his neighbor, Ariel Castro’s residence were Georgina “Gina” DeJesus, who disappeared at age 14 in 2004, and Michelle Knight, who vanished in August 2002, at age 21, according to police.
In 2003, the FBI posted an award of up to $25,000 for information leading to Berry’s rescue. Ramsey explained that he does not want the money and believes that it should go to the women he rescued.
The Cleveland man told Cooper that he did not consider himself a hero and did not wish to receive an award. “You’ve got to put that being a coward and ‘I don’t want to get in nobody’s business,'” he said. “You got to put that away for a minute.”
Hodge’s Cleveland, a restaurant where Ramsey works has started selling t-shirts to honor Ramsey with the slogan “Cleveland’s Hero — Charles Ramsey.” At Ramsey’s request, all proceeds will go to Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.
