Outside of Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and now President Barack Obama, most Black children are given lackluster education on their history. One parent is hoping to change that.
Leilani Brooks noticed the inadequate amount of resources that show positive images of Black history in pop culture. So, after the Trayvon Martin verdict, Brooks “felt empowered to offer our kids the truth about their heritage, and inspire them to be more than what society and Hollywood tell them they are.”
Thus, she created ABC Me Flashcards. Instead of the conventional “A is for Apple” type of cards, ABC Me features important Black history facts that correspond with letters of the alphabet, such as “E is for EBONY Magazine” and “W is for W.E.B. Du Bois.”
