5th Grade Teacher ‘Sorry’ for Blackface Costume

A white Alabama teacher has apologized for his “error in judgement” after dressing up as Kanye West and using Blackface for Halloween.

Decatur City Schools Superintendent Ed Nichols read a letter of apology from Heath Morrow during a press conference on Monday.

“To whom this may Concern,

I would like to first apologize for my error in judgement, but my intentions were not malicious or directed toward any certain group of people. I would also like to say that everyone who knows my character and knows my heart, knows that I have never seen color in my life. I wasn’t raised or taught that way and don’t raise my children that way. I see people for who they are, and my wife and I go out of our way to help anyone we can in my profession as an educator. When deciding to dress up for a Halloween party, my wife and I made a decision based on celebrities and the political climate today. I do not want this to reflect on my school or school system based on a poor decision that I made. Again I apologize and this will not happen again.

Sincerely,

Heath Morrow”

Morrow, who is a 5th grade teacher at Chestnut Grove Elementary School, and his wife dressed as Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. An image of the two was posted to his wife’s Facebook page, but has since been removed.

Superintendent Nichols said the district is investigating the incident.

“We are saddened as a district by the action of a member of our staff that have offended members of our community, and most of all, have taken away from the focus of our children and the good things that are going on in our school district and with our children,” Nichols said.

Nichols wouldn’t comment on the teacher’s current employment status with the district.
