We understand. Sometimes, problems with romantic relationships, friendships, career or family life get you down. And we want to help. That’s why JET is working with therapist, Jinnie Cristerna, who will take your questions and offer some sage, sanity-restoring advice and insight every Tuesday.
Well, ’tis the season and while some people will be spending the holidays with family and/or friends, others will be spending the day alone. If this is not your first Christmas alone, you may already have a routine; however, if this is the first time you find yourself alone for the holidays, you may be at a loss as to what to do that day. Here are five things you can do to get the most out of the holiday season:
1) Buy yourself a gift. This can be really fun. I mean, who better to fret over you than … YOU! Making sure to stay within your budget and means, go out and ponder over what you would really like to receive under the tree this year and get it. There is a pretty good chance that when you open it, it will be just what you wanted 🙂
2) Volunteer at a local shelter. What better way to give back and get grounded than to help those who are less fortunate. Volunteering allows you to gain perspective and experience gratitude at a deeper level. I’ve met so many wonderful people when I’ve volunteered that I ended up being the one who was saved and left wiser for the ware.
3) Make your favorite dish. Coming home to a wonderful dinner always makes us feel special. Preparing your food in advance so you can just cook it up on the stove makes the evening easy and deliciously comfortable. The most important part of your meal is being fully present and enjoying the food in its entirety. This means appreciating the appearance, aroma, and taste in each bite.
4) Reflect on the season. After dinner, sit down and reflect on the season. What comes to you when you think about the holidays and how has being alone this year helped you to grow or come closer to who you really are? These are questions that can help you bring clarity and face your fears safer than if in a group.
5) What was your story this year? Take a moment to create a narrative for yourself this year. Yes, that’s right – what is your story? Was it one of loneliness and despair; happiness and joy; victory and triumph, etc.? This is a time for you to bring it all together and see with your own eyes what you’ve created either consciously or unconsciously. Use this story as a tool to help you learn and grow for the following year (I will show you how in the next blog).
I hope you found this helpful as we enter the midst of the holiday season and prepare to begin a new year. From me and my family to you and yours, we wish you a wonderful and enlightening holiday season and fantastic New Year!
With love and light … pleasant journeys.
Jinnie
BTW – Here’s a link to one of my FAVORITE songs that I enjoy listening to when I need to chill out. It’s by the Gordon Brothers and is called “Chill Out Room” – ENJOY!
