Brian McKnight Spills on Managing Money Like a Pro

By// Sylvia Obell

With 16 Grammy nominations under his belt, Brian McKnight doesn’t just love to sing around the world, he’s well compensated for it. The singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist (he plays eight!) is releasing 15th studio album “More Than Words” this April. And JET asked the R&B legend spill three tips he has for budding musicians when it comes to the business of music.

1. Go Green by Using Cash

Always have enough money to buy the things you want. Black folks have a tendency to spend money they don’t have yet. If you don’t have the cash to pay for it now then don’t get it.

2. Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems — Seek Assistance

When you start making some money, it’s important to have someone you trust that will tell you no. Get a financial planner, or accountant.

3. Check Stops Here

Don’t give anyone the right to sign your name. Even more important, sign and review, each check that comes out of your accounts.
