Tell us your love story. Both: We first met at Cass Technical High School 24 years ago. However, we weren’t interested in each other. We have always had mutual friends and would say, “Hello” or have small talk over the years when we would see each other. One day, we exchanged phone numbers at the University of Michigan/Michigan State Black Alumni picnic. During our first conversation, we talked all night into the morning like we were teenagers.
How did he/she propose? Bride: My husband proposed by recreating our first date. I didn’t even have a hint until almost the very end. We went to the same movie theater, walked through downtown Birmingham, MI and had drinks at Mitchell’s Seafood just like we did on the first date. It wasn’t until he said, “No, we didn’t sit in this spot before, let’s sit over here” did I think he was up to something. The place we had drinks at happens to be next door to my favorite restaurant, Cameron’s Steakhouse. He pretended that we were walking to the car, but took my hand and redirected me there instead. Half way through the meal, he asked the waiter to take a picture of us, which really was the video and he had me stand up and at that moment he got on his knee and proposed.
What do you love best about one another? Bride: I love my husband’s sense of humor. He loves that no matter what I have his back and support him.
What’s the key to the success of your relationship? Both: We put each other first. We make sure that we make time for each other and we’re friends.
Why do you want to be included in JET love? Bride: Carlton and I have found something very special. We have been together for almost seven years and we truly enjoy each other’s company. I think what’s important is that we are friends first and we both want to have a committed healthy relationship that stands the test of time.
