News: Ballot Blocking in Florida

Has a Florida politician ripped a page from the Jim Crow era? Gov. Rick Scott recently ignited public outcry for attempting to clear nearly 182,000 names from voter registration rolls. Some opponents include the NAACP, which compares the tactics to voter intimidation policies of the ’60s. The civil rights organization claims that the governor’s plan aims to eliminate Black, Latino, and poor voters from the official register. Scott ignored a federal order to stop the purge, insisting the effort will simply remove non-citizens and ineligible voters from the rolls. NAACP President Benjamin Jealous disagrees. “What we are facing is a coordinated effort to block the vote,” he said during a press briefing.
