It takes a while to pin Earvin “Magic” Johnson down. And rightfully so. The man’s been busy. In addition to leading a group of investors in the purchase of the Los Angeles Dodgers for a reported $2 billion, Johnson is developing a credit card, and recently launched his own TV network, Aspire.
If that’s not enough, he’s also been globetrotting to attend premieres of The Announcement, a documentary on the events leading up to his unveiling his HIV+ status in 1991. Like we said, the man is busy. But that’s the price the iconic point guard of the Los Angeles Lakers’ “Showtime” era has to pay to build an empire that rivals Donald Trump’s.
As CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, the living legend has redefined the term multitasking as he maintains ownership of 20 radio stations, two magazines (Vibe and Uptown) and the Soul Train brand. He also holds equally impressive titles, including HIV/AIDS activist, ESPN analyst, husband, father of three, and granddaddy of two.
On a sunny day in Beverly Hills, Johnson graciously carved a couple hours from his hectic schedule to talk to JET about his past, present, and legacy.
