After a five-year film hiatus, Chris Tucker has returned to the big-screen in an atypical role. As Danny, a warmhearted pal who doles out inspirational quotes in Silver Linings Playbook (out Nov. 21), Tucker is making a departure from all the things that initially made him famous. He’s not loud. He’s not brazen. He’s not even the star. “I loved this role,” Tucker says. “Because it’s different from what people saw me in.”

The 40-year-old— who earned his fortune from blockbuster hits such as Friday and the Rush Hour franchise— believed it was time to switch things up. So, when he was approached about a project that addresses the quirks of life post mental institu- tionalization, and featured Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, Tucker hopped on. “It’s serious, but the comedy comes out of the realness of the movie,” he says.
