Organic eating may be en vogue, but cutting out processed foods can also be expensive. Enter our hero: Chicago-based chef Judson Allen, The Next Food Network Star finalist, who offers up five tips to make home cooking healthier without going over budget.
Get Creative
Step outside of your comfort zone in the produce aisle. Pick up your usual spinach, celery or apples but challenge yourself to select different kinds of fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. For example, swap some collards for kale, the recently crowned superfood “queen of greens.”
Color Coded
We truly eat with our eyes first. Add in brightly shaded foods like bell peppers, seasonal fruits and green leafy vegetables. Enjoy the vibrant building blocks of a nutrient-rich diet. Place some blueberries and raspberries atop a chicken salad to make it even better.
