Yara Shahidi Is About To Get ‘Grown-ish’

Yara Shahidi’s Black-ish spin-off just got a dope name change — and we’re here for it.

Earlier this year, Black-ish creator, Kenya Barris, dropped a major bomb on the sitcom’s fans. Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey Johnson, would be getting her own college-themed series (ala A Different World) that would hit the Freeform network in 2018.

The series was initially going to be called College-ish and would follow Zoey on her higher ed adventures away from the familiar flow of the Johnson’s Los Angeles household. Now, it looks like the new series just got a lit new name.

In an interview with BlackTreeTV, the Girls Trip scribe revealed the name.

“It’s now called Grown-ish,” said Barris. “We start the writer’s room Monday. Me and Yara have been in casting, looking for the best, brightest and newest faces. We have some people that we’re really excited about. She is amazing, she’s been my partner on this and it’s great.”

Trevor Jackson and Mallory Sparks starred in the backdoor pilot of Grown-ish earlier this year when it aired during an episode of Black-ish. However, Freeform has yet to confirm if the actors will return full-time for the series when it drops next year.

We do know that along with Shahidi, Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, who portray Zoey’s parents Dre and Bow respectively, will appear on both Black-ish and Grown-ish concurrently. (YASSSS multiple network paychecks!)

Check out a clip of the interview below.

Black-ish returns for Season Four on Oct. 3rd, 2017.
