Although The Wire has ended, the cast of the HBO series are still gathering together to share the stories of the people of Baltimore.
The actors reunited over the weekend for “Wired Up! A Celebration of the Spirit + Power of the People of Baltimore,” a reading of monologues written by residents during a two-day workshop.
The pieces, recited by the cast, reflected the events surrounding the riots following the death of Freddie Gray.
Michael K. Williams, Sonja Sohn, Andre Royo, Larry Gilliard Jr., and Felicia “Snoop” Pearson were all in attendance. Dominic West, Wendell Pierce and series creator David Simon appeared via video.
“We lived here while we were shooting and became a part of these communities. There’s a real core group of us who feel parts of Baltimore are woven into who we are as result of the time we spent here,” Sohn told the Baltimore Sun.
In addition to creating a special project that documented the historic protests, the stars also wanted to ensure that the citizens’ voices were heard.
During the workshops, Sohn said many of the natives expressed their displeasure with the news coverage of April’s marches. Their discontent encouraged them to share their own record of events.
“One thing we as artists can give back is that we know the power of storytelling,” Sohn stated. “We know how it heals and radiates outward and what it inspires in other people. And so, we’re going to give a platform to these folks who felt they were not being heard.”
