They were labeled as a gang of “Killer Lesbians” and a “Wolf Pack” in the tabloids.
The reality for Renata, Patreese, Venice, Terrain and three others, however, was an act of self-defense. And their story is gaining attention once again.
In 2006, the New Jersey women were in a gay-friendly neighborhood in New York City, when taunts, aggravation and violent threats were darted their way from a man on the street. The women defended themselves and in turn, charged with gang assault and attempted murder.
Three of the ladies pleaded guilty in order to avoid a trial. The remaining four, named above, are now known as the “New Jersey 4,” and continue to fight their charges and maintain their innocence.
Out In The Night, directed and produced by blair dorosh-walther, is the award-winning documentary that sheds light on this controversial story. The docu-film also draws attention to self-defense, resistance and civil rights while deeply examining the role that race, gender and sexuality play in the criminal justice system.
