Instant Mom Debuts on Sunday

What happens when a party girl from California suddenly has to trade in all-nighters for parent-teacher conferences? That’s precisely the scenario when Tia Mowry-Hardrict’s character, “Stephanie,” marries an older doctor (Michael Boatman) in the new sitcom “Instant Mom” premiering this weekend.

With absolutely no experience, “Stephanie” struggles to hop into her new role as the mother to not one, but three kids.  JET spoke with the entrepreneur and actress about this exciting new role.

“She’s like a fish out of water,” Mowry-Hardrict tells JET. “I think one of her challenges is when she should be their friend and when she should be their mom.”

Luckily, Stephanie has some help along the way – her mother. Played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, “Maggie” is by her side giving tons of tips even when her daughter thinks it’s too much.

“Maggie is best described as a hurricane in a dress. Once you open the door, nothing will ever be the same,” Ralph jokes.

Just because Stephanie becomes an instant mom does not mean Maggie becomes an instant grandmother. In fact, she forbids the term.

“We never use the g word! In the back her mind, she says ‘call me glam-mom,'” Ralph exclaims.

NickMom’s first original sitcom is full of laughs and is for everyone. But this isn’t your average family show. It highlights the atypical family.

“This is a blended family. You don’t see a lot of shows on television that focuses on blended families, and that’s a part of our generation right now,” explains Mowry-Hardrict.

And the leading ladies couldn’t ask for a better cast to represent what households look like today.

“I’m very happy that we’ve got this show with this cast with these people playing these roles in a family that is just exemplary – not perfect. We make our mistakes, but we agree to disagree…and then go shopping,” Ralph laughs.

Tune in Sunday, Sept. 29 night at 8:30 ET on Nick at Nite to catch the gang in action.
