In Disney’s Coco, we’ll soon discover what it would be like if our ancestors got to visit our world once a year.
The gorgeous and whimsical trailer for Coco opens with the narrator setting the scene for the Day of the Dead. He says, “Once every year, our ancestors come back to our world to see family and friends. But no living person has ever visited their world—until now.” Shortly thereafter we meet Miguel (voiced by newcomer Anthony Gonzalez), a precocious young boy who dreams of becoming a world-renowned musician. After picking up an old guitar used by one of his ancestors, Miguel finds himself transported into the gorgeous and vividly colorful world of the land of the dead. Along with Hector (voiced by Mozart in the Jungle star Gael García Bernal), a swindler Miguel encounters, the duo set off on an epic journey. Along the way, they attempt to uncover the true story behind Miguel’s family history and get him back to the land of the living.
Though Coco is about the afterlife, it’s definitely still extremely light-hearted. Basically, it’s the opposite of Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride.
Joining Gonzalez and Bernal in the Disney/Pixar flick is Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, Sofía Espinosa, Luis Valdez and Lombardo Boyar among others.
Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich directed Coco, along with co-director Adrian Molin. You can expect the film that makes the afterlife look glam to hit theaters Nov. 22, just in time for Thanksgiving. Watch the trailer below.
