We have to talk about the female-led thriller Assassination Nation.
The edgy thriller which is being driven by a young all-female cast including, Odessa Young, Hari Nef, R&B musician/rapper Abra, and Suki Waterhouse follows four teenage girls in a small suburb who become the focus of unwanted, worldwide media attention after their personal information is leaked by an anonymous hacker.
The film which is being helmed by Sam Levinson strikes super close to home for millennials, especially young women who have watched female celebs get their personal and private photos leaked and spread across the web for everyone to see. Revenge porn has also become a major issue in the age of robust social media. Though it doesn’t have quite the same plot as Arthur Miller’s 1953 play The Crucible which surrounds the Salem Witch Trials, Assassination Nation certainly has some similar themes.
Though the young ladies will be the focus of the film, Levinson has also called in the big guns to give Assassination Nation some major weight. According to Variety, Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose has been cast as, “an attractive woman with terrible taste in men, who has an unfortunate reputation in the conservative town of Salem. When the mysterious hacker outs her for her various affairs with the town’s married men, she faces scorn, public ridicule and downright abuse from the outraged citizenry.” Rose’s character is the mother of the characters played by Abra and Suki Waterhouse.
Bella Thorne, Maude Apatow, Bill Skarsgard, Joel McHale, and Colman Domingo are also set to star in the film.
Assassination Nation will begin shooting in Louisiana in the coming weeks, so we assume that it will debut sometime next year. Are you ready for Assassination Nation? It certainly sounds killer.
