Would You Take a Class on Beyonce?

Rutgers University to begin offering course on Beyonce.

Professor, bring out the projector, please.

Kevin Allred of Rutgers University in New Jersey is set to teach a course called “Politicizing Beyonce.” The class will be part of the university’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and aims to use the pop star’s career “as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics,” according to the school’s website.

“She certainly pushes boundaries,” Allred says. “While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.”

The pop star is no stranger to scrutiny, recently coming under fire for her risque “Drunk in Love” performance with hubby Jay Z at the Grammys on Sunday.

The course will be part of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers and include readings from Black feminists.
